Unawatuna, Galle, Sri Lanka
Unawatuna sits at the edge of one of Sri Lanka's richest corners. The beach is right here — but twenty minutes by tuk-tuk is a UNESCO World Heritage fort. An hour south is a national park with the highest density of leopards on earth. The bay has turtles in it. We've listed the best of what's close.
Sri Lanka's finest colonial monument is a 20-minute tuk-tuk ride east. Inside the Fort's Dutch ramparts: 17th-century streets, boutique galleries, exceptional restaurants, and a sunset walk above the Indian Ocean that you'll plan your evening around. Ask us to arrange a guided tour.

The beach begins at the garden's edge — a natural crescent of fine sand sheltered by the headland to the west. The bay's calm, clear water makes it one of Sri Lanka's most swum beaches. Sunbeds and towels are provided for guests.

Koggala Lake, fifteen minutes east of the resort, is one of Sri Lanka's largest coastal lagoons — ringed with mangroves, cinnamon plantations, and small temple islands. Guided boat tours weave through the waterways; the birdlife alone makes it worth the morning. Ask us to arrange a trip.

Unawatuna's reef sits metres from the shore. Rent a mask and join the green turtles and parrotfish that live in the bay year-round. Kayaks and paddleboards are available through local operators on the beach.

Weligama Bay, 20 minutes west along the coast, is one of Sri Lanka's best beginner surf breaks — a wide, gentle beach break with patient instructors on the sand. Group and private lessons run daily from the beach huts along the bay. We can arrange transport and a session timed for the right tide.

Green and hawksbill sea turtles nest and feed in Unawatuna Bay year-round. On most mornings you'll find them grazing the reef just metres from the shoreline — no boat required. Swim out beyond the break, move quietly, and they'll ignore you completely. Snorkel kit available at the front desk.

The waters off Sri Lanka's southern coast are among the most reliable in the world for whale watching. Blue whales, sperm whales, spinner dolphins, and occasional orcas pass through the deep water south of Mirissa — 40 minutes from the resort. Departures leave at dawn and return before lunch.

A 40-minute walk along the Unawatuna shoreline leads to the Japanese Peace Pagoda, built by Buddhist monks in 1978 on the headland that shelters the bay. The views from the top — Galle Fort to the east, the bay below, open ocean to the south — are worth the climb at any hour.
